The Cancun International Airport is the busiest airport in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. Flight from all over the world arrive bringing tourists to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Chichen Itza and Mexico's Riviera Maya. The airport is located on the south side of Cancun, 20 minutes from the center of town. This puts it closer to the popular tourist destination
There are two terminals at the airport. The main building has all domestic flights and international flights from most of the major airlines such as American Airlines and Continental Airlines. The smaller, newer building has flights from smaller charter airlines such as Sun Country, Champion, Allegro and American Trans Air.
Both airport terminals have immigration and customs facilities, restaurants, bathrooms, duty free shopping and you can smoke anywhere you want. After you leave customs, ignore the people at official looking desks pretending to recognize you as part of their tour group. They are just looking to sell you hotels and tours.
Do not change money at the airport because the exchange rates there are terrible. Instead, bring your ATM card or cash and visit a bank when you get to your destination. Feel free to take the brochures and booklets handed to you. Some have good maps and coupons. Airport transportation services are located outside of the two airport terminals. It is easier and safer to use an airport transfer company instead of a taxi or bus.
Check with your travel agent for international airfare reservations. There are charter airlines which fly from major US cities, but they change all the time. The major airlines flying in and out of Cancun are:
